In January, I had the pleasure of attending one of Larry Bachus’ Pump Guy Seminars. I joined 15 attendees in La Porte, Texas, a suburb of Houston with oil and gas refineries everywhere you look. We shared an industrial setting at Endress+Hauser’s Flow Calibration Center and spent time learning about pumps, the heart of all flow systems. You don’t know what you are missing if you have never heard the Pump Guy present. His passion and enthusiasm for the subject is unrivaled, and the attendees (from as far away as St. Martin in the Caribbean and as close as Houston) took to the conversations immediately and fired back with questions of their own.

During my time with the group, the Pump Guy covered several topics including reliability, root cause analysis, cavitation, pump principles and pump curves. During the three-day seminar, even more topics are covered.

Of course system efficiency (important for any flow system) and energy efficiency are topics important in all treatment processes. In our February 2016 issue, Jim Lauria and Srikanth Pathapati of Mazzei discuss how computational fluid dynamics help ensure better mixing and, therefore, better treatment. Water treatment and the equipment involved are the focus of this issue’s cover series.

In addition to this water treatment section, this issue includes an article on adjustable frequency drives that also provide safety from arc flash events. A Q&A covers the growing influence of industrial cybersecurity.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the Water Quality Association Convention & Exposition, where we will learn more about treating water. We will be at Booth 114, so stop by and see us if you’re there.
