The U.S. Department of Energy released a new draft Pump Energy Index (PEI) calculation tool for the pump industry.
The tool is an Excel spreadsheet designed to perform the calculations necessary to determine PEI as proposed in DOE's Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (Dockets EERE-2011-BT-STD-0031 and EERE-2013-BT-TP-0055). DOE says on its website it is providing the calculator as a convenience at the request of interested parties.

According to the Hydraulic Institute, its members worked closely with the DOE throughout the rulemaking process for the Energy Conservation Standard on Commercial Industrial Pumps. As part of that process, HI’s Pump System Performance Metric (PSPM) committee supported the industry by working with the DOE to develop the tool to evaluate the PEI of pumps.
According to HI, this tool will help pump manufacturers evaluate how their pump efficiencies stack up to the proposed minimum efficiency levels which will be set in the Energy Conservation Standard.
